User notes: Do not assume that because any particular person on this website or in Happily Hippie is described as a hippie, including the webmaster/author, that that person is a user of "drugs," illegal or otherwise. Countercultural identity is a nexus of factors that manifest in any given individual. Some drugs are rightly associated with hippie culture, and I will sometimes use marijuana use, for instance, as a partial way of identifying someone as hippie. However, it’s also true that some individuals are identifiably hippie in a number of ways yet refrain from use or abuse of any substances--non-"drug"-using hippies.

It’s also true that ethnic identity is often at least partly a matter of individual choice. It’s best to let individuals make that choice for themselves; on the other hand, the very nature of this work requires me to give examples of hippie individuals, to sometimes identify someone as hippie or countercultural; celebrities, of course, make good reference points. When I do give such examples, I try to use at least one of three basic means of " ” use) that most would safely consider countercultural; 2) A public reputation or image: people already widely consider the person in question countercultural or hippie; 3) Self-labeling: when an individual refers to him or herself as "hippie," "countercultural" or by words that seem a euphemism for such ("earth mother," for instance). Often, to be safe, I going to briefly explain why I see someone as countercultural when I refer to that person unless the connection would likely be considered obvious (any of the Beatles from the late sixties on, for instance). And, yes, there are thousands who I consider borderline; only they can decide whether they see themselves as part of the counterculture or hippie culture; I usually won‘t use them as evidence.

Generally, imposing an ethnic identity on the unwilling is wrong, and that means not forcing countercultural identity on people as well as being tolerant and respectful of those who have chosen and/or inherited such an identity.
